The city of Mérida has inaugurated the world’s first International Center for Peace Education, a dedicated space under the auspices of the World Summit of Nobel Peace Laureates that aims to advance global peace through education and cooperative engagement. In a ceremony held in the historic Hall of Portraits at the Government Palace, the Center’s opening was celebrated by local and international dignitaries, including Ekaterina Zagladina, President and Permanent Secretary of the Summit, who praised the project’s potential to inspire peace-driven initiatives worldwide.
The new Center, established in partnership with the Autonomous University of Yucatán (UADY) and housed within the former UADY Law School, represents a milestone in the promotion of peaceful collaboration and community improvement in the Yucatán region.
The International Nobel Peace Center for Education offers diverse educational programs focused on peacebuilding, quality of life enhancement, and sustainable development. It will be a platform where students, educators, and community members can gather to share experiences, discuss global challenges, and create collective solutions. Governor Díaz Mena underscored the critical role of education in sustaining peace, pointing to the importance of preparing youth to address local, national, and global issues through dialogue, understanding, and innovation.
Ekaterina Zagladina expressed gratitude for the State Government’s support, noting that the Center will not only nurture young Yucatecan minds but also serve as a hub for Nobel Laureates and peace advocates from around the world to share their knowledge and experiences. “This Center will encourage initiatives focused on peace-related topics and establish a dedicated Center for Thought, where Laureates can engage directly with the community,” Zagladina remarked.
