A Call to Action: Ira Helfand’s Urgent Warning on Nuclear Warfare

18 april 2024- Rome, Italy.

An important accomplishment was achieved by Ira Helfand during the hearing at the House Foreign Affairs and Defense committees on nuclear disarmament issues sponsored by the Democratic Party held yesterday in Rome. In a momentous address at the Chamber of Deputies in Italy, Dr. Ira Helfand delivered a compelling discourse that reverberated with urgency and necessity and marked a pivotal juncture in the global dialogue on the perils of nuclear warfare. At the heart of Dr. Helfand’s discourse lies a resounding plea for action—a clarion call for disarmament and to advocate for the endorsement of the Treaty on the Prohibition of nuclear weapons.

Nuclear disarmament and withdrawal of nuclear arsenals have always been a cornerstone of the Nobel Peace Laureates’ Permanent Secretariat agenda advocacy for global peace.

Nuclear weapons pose an existential threat to humanity and the planet. A total and global commitment to non-proliferation and disarmament is indispensable”, stated Marzio Dellagiovanna, Vice President of the Executive Board of the Permanent Secretariat of the World Summit of Nobel Peace Laureates.

Nuclear deterrence represents mass suicide. It would presuppose perfect technology, impeccable intelligence and a rational political class. We must eliminate nuclear weapons before they eliminate all humanity. Because sooner or later they will be used”, said Livia Malcangio, institutional relations officer of the Permanent Secretariat of the World Summit of Nobel Peace Laureates.
